No matter how much you enjoy the night before, there’s always a morning after.

I woke up to the sound of a door closing at dawn—untouched, mind you—on Marco’s couch. He’d left, his surfboard gone.

After I folded up his blanket, retrieved my drawings, and stifled my headache by telling myself I wasn’t hung-over, I managed to make it to his door, then peer into the hallway.

It was empty. Oh, thank you, God. I could do the fake walk of shame without witnesses.

As I sneaked out, I thought what a bummer it was that I hadn’t earned the walk or enjoyed the fun part. Come to think of it, I’d be a perfect candidate for an immaculate conception. Skip the good times and go right for the labor.

At any rate, I think I might have slammed his door. Didn’t mean to, but I didn’t have excellent control over my motor skills at the moment.

The sound flushed out Sheila.

I should’ve known she’d be listening for Marco’s skank-du-jour because it was a Sunday ritual.

At first, when she oh-so-casually stepped out to retrieve the heavy roll of our Union-Tribune, she pretended not to notice me. I stopped in my tracks, hoping my washed out skin made me blend with the white walls.

No such luck. She slowly fixed her attention on me with a friendly vamp hunter grin of victory. She was ready to fire off some questions to Marco’s latest. Then the smile misted away.

“Mandy?”

Funny, but I could almost see the slow death of our friendship drain from her eyes. Each second that passed bled another drop of trust, replacing it with a mile of distance.

I just about felt sorry for her right now, but why? Why was it up to me to apologize when she’d been out with Brennan yesterday?

“How is he?” I asked.

Sheila’s skin turned a raging pink as she avoided my question. “So you and Marco?”

Didn’t she know better? I wasn’t a screw-and-be-through type of girl. I’m not sure I could even look in the mirror if I became one.

But was this the only way to get Sheila to stop moving in on my guys? Would I have to see how she liked it when the tables were turned?

No. I’d been avoiding The Talk with Sheila like the plague. It was the most passive-aggressive thing I could’ve done, and I couldn’t continue like that anymore.

“Sheila, could we just talk—?”

She zoomed back into our apartment, and I followed her. While she made a beeline for her room, I faintly realized Corrine was still sleeping on the couch. I trailed Sheila. Before she could shut the door, I stiff-armed the wood, stepping into her room, shutting the door behind me.

She whipped around to face me. “Brennan and I only went to Calliope’s.”

It was a Greek restaurant, one of his favorites. Somewhere he used to take me all the time.
